JACKSON, Miss. –If you’ve lived in Mississippi all your life, you’ve never had to experience an actual earthquake. But all the experts say the threat is real.
“It’s not a question of if it’s ever gonna happen again, it is when,” said Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesperson Greg Flynn. And perhaps the scariest part, “there is no warning. An earthquake can happen right now, on the sunniest day,” he explained. So the best thing you can do Flynn says, “take a moment, practice what you would do if all of a sudden the ground would start shaking. Drop, cover and hold; and just be prepared.”
You can get some of that practice Thursday morning during a statewide Great Central U.S. ShakeOut earthquake drill. Nearly 200, 000 groups have already registered to participate.
