JACKSON, Miss.–The city of Jackson will have a ship with its namesake in the U.S. Naval Fleet in a few years.
On Tuesday the Coat of Arms for the USS Jackson was unveiled at city hall with Navy officials along with city leaders.
“It’s a new class of ship that we’re putting into operation in the fleet,” said Commander Michael Davies who’ll be in charge of the ship. “There are only four of them out there right now.”
When it’s finished in 2015 the ship will still be only the sixth of its kind in the Navy.
“It’s capable of a variety of missions and things that it can be outfitted with depending on the task,” he said.
Once it’s operational there will be a working crew of about 40 men on the vessel and it can be bolstered up to even more if needed.
Davies unveiled the coat of arms that has “AD VICTORUM IRE SPOLIA” which translates to “To the Victor goes the Spoils.”
“The USS Jackson will eventually be ported out of San Diego,” he said.
