HATTIESBURG, Miss.–The University of Southern Mississippi has received a letter from the Department of the Army stating their ROTC program will be cut at the end of 2015.
On Friday, Governor Phil Bryant spoke on campus in support of the ROTC program that dates back to 1951.
“We’re trying to find out why MS has been targeted for termination with this program,” he told News Mississippi at the capital Thursday.
Bryant has also now written a letter to the Secretary of the Army urging him to reconsider the shutdown.
“We think there are many places in Washington D.C. that this type of cut can happen,” he said.
Nationally there are also 12 other ROTC programs slated to be closed.
