This weekend, High schoolers will be competing in teams at the Magnificent Things Competition at the Hattiesburg Maker Faire. They will be given a box of supplies and equipment and will build their best creation with what they have. Anna Wan, a committee member for the faire and a Professor at the University of Southern Mississippi, said it’s where artists and makers can come and share things that they have made. Children will also be able to participate in different activities.
“At this maker faire there’s interactive booths and there’s show and tell booths so Mississippi Children’s Museum will be here with an interactive booth, Central Creativity in makerspace and moral will have activities for kids as well, Lamar County CTE will have a station and all of these activities are free,” said Wan. “Camp Shelby will be here to demo what they do at camp Shelby as well.”
The event will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 3rd, at the Historic Hattiesburg Train Depot. Admission for the event is free, however, Wan said there is a $40 sign-up fee per team for the Magnificent Things Competition.
“It’s like a market if you will, but without the pressure of selling because we can’t sell anything, so it’s the ultimate window shopping experience without the shopping part,” Wan said. “You just get to see what people have made, so it’s like an adult show and tell although there will be kids as well.”
