School districts across the state shut down for several days this week as Mississippi dealt with severe winter weather.

A concern among the districts was how they would be able to make up the missed days as the school year moved along. Today, Governor Phil Bryant issued a proclamation stating that the Department of Education will make the call on whether or not the districts must make up the missed days.

“I have declared a State of Emergency for school districts affected by this week’s winter weather. The State Board of Education retains authority to decide if schools will make up any days missed,” Gov. Bryant tweeted.

In the proclamation, the Governor states that it may not be financially feasible to operate schools for the full 180-days after this week’s closures.

Accompanying his statement was the full proclamation related to the state of emergency.

Governor Bryant’s post did not include a timeline of when a decision on the make-up days could be announced.
