The Rankin County Sheriff’s Department received a report on Christmas day of an unconscious man at a home in a subdivision in the northern part of the county.

Deputy Chance White was dispatched to the residence along with Reservoir Fire and Pafford Ambulance due to the possibility of an overdose.

Deputy White met a woman at the residence who said that her boyfriend had been drinking all day and had been smoking marijuana and taking oxycodone. Deputy White said that the man was unconscious, unresponsive, and not breathing well. Deputy White administered “Narcan” a nasal spray that helps reverse the effects of a drug overdose. Shortly after administering the “Narcan”, the victim began breathing stronger and his status improved. Fire and medical personnel arrived on scene and took over treatment.

All Rankin County Deputies have been issued “Narcan” after a grant came from the Mississippi Department of Mental Health. This is the first case where a Rankin County Deputy has saved a life using the new drug.

“We thank the Department of Mental Health for providing this life-saving drug to law enforcement officers across the state at no cost,” said Sheriff Bryan Bailey.
