Two women from McComb have been sentenced for drug trafficking conspiracy.
U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst and FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Freeze announced Thursday that 31-year-old Shawanda Matthews, and 37-year-old Veronica Thomas, both of McComb, were sentenced on November 14 by senior U.S. District Judge David Bramlette III, for their roles in a drug trafficking conspiracy.
Shawanda Matthews was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release, and Veronica Thomas was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release.
The defendants were charged as the result of a lengthy investigation into a drug trafficking organization operating in south Mississippi.
Hurst said that the case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Safe Streets Task Force in Hattiesburg, along with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Office of the Mississippi State Auditor, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and the Hattiesburg Police Department. In addition, the case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jerry L. Rushing.
