A statue of Eudora Welty was dedicated at Millsaps on Monday, Nov. 13. The statue will be located in the garden.
The statue was given to the college in honor of Dr. Suzanne Marrs, emerita professor of English and noted Welty scholar. The statue will be seated on a bench in the Nicholson Garden that is located on the north side of the Christian Center.
She will be placed there, holding a copy of “The Optimist’s Daughter,” the 1973 novel that Welty won the Pulitzer Prize for.
The formal dedication was held at 4:00 p.m.
The sculpture was created by Ben Watts who is a 1980 graduate of Millsaps. He earned his BBA in accounting and then worked in his family’s retail business for 20 years, Watts began to pursue a full-time career in art.
The Welty sculpture is Watts’ second to be placed on the Millsaps campus; his status of John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, stands overlooking the Bowl.
