This week a Veterans Memorial Bridge was dedicated and the sign unveiled in Lafayette County.
“On behalf of the Department of Transportation, these are among the most positive things that we get to do,” said Mike Tagert, Transportation Commissioner for the Northern District. “To participate in events like this where we get to take public infrastructure and we name them for real people in public service and real people in military service. Especially this week as we are celebrating Veterans Day.”
The bridge is located on Highway 7 North at the Little Tallahatchie Bridge north of Abbeville.
State Representative Steve Massengill was also present at the unveiling of the sign and extended his appreciation to the veterans in attendance at the event and thanked them for their service.
“What a small way to thank the men and women that gave so much for our freedom,” said Jeff Busby, President of the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors. “Yes, it is just a sign over a concrete bridge that allows us to cross the Little Tallahatchie some would say, but my hope is that each time we cross this bridge and see the sign we would reflect back on those men and women that devoted their lives and sometimes gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we may live with the freedoms we have today. My hope is that this sign will keep that meaning alive for many generations to come. When our children and grandchildren see the sign and ask us, ‘did you know a veteran?’ we can tell them of the sacrifices that so many fought and died for. To our veterans, thank you for the love that you have for this community and our great nation, and for the service that you have provided.”
