Thursday in Lyon, near Clarksdale, officials and residents celebrated the 200th maker on the Mississippi Blues Trail.
“This week after ten years we have unveiled our 200th marker in Lyon, Mississippi which is right next to Clarksdale, that already has 15 markers,” said Craig Ray, Director of Visit Mississippi.
The marker, that coincides with the state’s 200th birthday is in honor of the 1951 single “Rocket 88” by Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats.
The song is recognized by many as the first rock’n’roll song.
“We have seven states, Mississippi, and four countries for the Blues Trail. All that ties into a tourist that comes to the Delta and visits the B.B. King museum, the Grammy Museum, and it really has become quite the tourist product that no one else has. You can’t duplicate that part of history,” said Ray.
