Governor Bryant has asked the Division of Medicaid to submit a plan to him today that would transfer eligibility determination responsibilities to the Mississippi Department of Human Services.
“The governor believes doing so would increase efficiency and ultimately save taxpayers money,” said Clay Chandler Director of Communications for Governor Phil Bryant.
Chandler also said that Mississippi is one of only four states that does not currently use their human services or health departments for Medicaid eligibility determination.
He added that this method was previously used by the state successfully up until 2004 when the law was changed.
The department of human services already determines eligibility to multiple federal assistance programs such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and food stamps.
