On October 7th, a Western film made in Mississippi and based on a true story of events which took place in the state will premiere and begin a theatrical tour around the U.S.
The film is Blood Country and it is based on the short story “The Outlaw, the Sheriff, and the Governor” by Robert E. Jones (included in his book Mississippi Gumbo) which itself is based on true events in Lawrence County, Mississippi. The story revolves around Joe Loftin (Chris Bosarge), a man accused of killing his brother, and the honorable sheriff Dan Lee (Cotton Yancey) who must bring him to justice.
Produced in early 2017, this is the third feature film Mills and his company Running Wild Films have brought to the state: starting with the comedy/mystery Porches and Private Eyes and followed by the Oxford Film Festival-winner Don’t Come Around Here. Next month, production starts on the fourth Mississippi feature film from these filmmakers, a movie about the Dixie Mafia titled The Cornbread Cosa Nostra.
Featuring a cast of actors from Mississippi and surrounding states, Blood Country premieres in Monticello, where much of this Western takes place, on October 7th followed by screenings around the state including screenings in Vicksburg, Oxford and Ocean Springs. A showing at the Malco in Madison sold out two months early and an additional showing has been added for the Jackson area on November 2nd at the historic Capri Theatre in Fondren.
The film will then expand to theaters outside Mississippi including screenings in Louisiana, Arkansas and Tennessee.
