The Rebels secured their second win this season thanks to record-breaking passing game from QB Shea Patterson and the wide receiver corps. Meanwhile, the Rebel defense continued to shudder early, allowing the Skyhawks to maintain a nine point lead in the first quarter.
The highlight of interim head coach Matt Luke’s offense was undoubtedly the air game: Patterson threw 43 times, completing 32 of those attempts with a single interception, racking up 489 yards (breaking Chad Kelly’s record for passing yards in a game. Sorry, Chad.), and five touchdowns.
The Rebel receivers showed out: A.J. Brown catching two touchdowns, while DaMarkus Lodge, Jordan Wilkins, and D.K. Metcalf each reeling in one.
If the offense can keep up the tempo (and if the receivers can keep outrunning defenders), while the defense continues to tune up, Ole Miss could keep up with Cal next week.
