It’s Carole Summerall’s birthday today, but the Colombus native is not spending it blowing out candles on a cake or celebrating with her family. She is spending her birthday taking care of others just like she has done many times before.
She is spending her birthday taking care of others just like she has done many times before.
Summerall will be working to help flood victims in Louisiana and then possibly head to Texas.
“We are actually going to be assigned to Mass care which is feeding, we will probably mostly be doing mobile feeding,” said Carole Summerall, a volunteer with the Mississippi branch of the American Red Cross. “We will be staging at an area where there is a mobile kitchen and crew.”
However, this isn’t the first time that the Columbus native has given up her birthday plans to help others.
Summerall also spent her birthday serving people in need during Hurricane Katrina back in 2005.
“Sometimes you get called away when you don’t want to, but it’s a good feeling when you’re helping people.” said Summerall.
Summerall will be working driving an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) for the next two weeks, and then she said she will come back home for a few days and head back out again.
“The boxes usually contain between 200 to 400 meals, and we do that twice a day,” said Summerall. “So, we may be serving between 400 and 800 meals per day. We are going to be working 10-12 hours a day.”
