YAZOO CITY, Miss.–Yazoo City, LeFlore County and Claiborne County could all be looking at possible state takeovers this week. It’s a measure the state uses only if school districts are doing so badly that the department feels they can no longer pull themselves up by their own boot straps.
That means, typically, the districts are in violation of state standards.
Yazoo and LeFlore County were late additions to the discussion, coming on to the agenda Thursday, while Claiborne County has been under consideration longer.
The Yazoo City and LeFlore County districts have a record of doing poorly on state tests.
Tuesday is the meeting of the state accreditation board. The Dept. of Education meeting could happen after that and if the governor approves, the takeovers would happen in short order.
One of the big consequences: it could wreck the football seasons for those schools. They may be allowed to play in only half the regular season games, and none of the play-offs.
The school boards and superintendents would also be dumped in favor of temporary conservators.
