Jackson, Miss.– Gov. Phil Bryant has set Nov. 7 as the date for the special election for Senate District 10. The seat was recently vacated when former Sen. Bill Stone resigned.
The qualifying deadline is Sept 18. If no candidate receives a majority of votes cast on Nov. 7, a runoff will be held on Nov. 28. District 10 covers parts of Marshall and Tate counties.
Stone announced his retirement on his official Facebook page:
I will begin my new job as General Manager of the Holly Springs Utility Department. While I am excited about this new chapter in my life and this new position, which holds many challenges and many opportunities, I am going to miss my many friends and colleagues in the Legislature and the legislative process. It’s been a great nearly 10 years and I want to thank the people of both my old district and my new one for the opportunity to work for them at the State Capitol. When I first ran for the Senate in 2008, I made a commitment to be accessible and available when you need me and to work for the things important to working families in Mississippi. There have many successes as well as many frustrations but, most importantly, I feel like I have lived up to that commitment and always done what I felt was right for the state and our district. My successor will be chosen in a special election later this fall and, in the meantime, I will continue to assist with constituent issues and problems as best I can until the new Senator is seated. Again, a big THANK YOU to the people of Marshall and Tate Counties and Benton and Tippah Counties for allowing me this honor for the past nearly 10 years as I look forward to continuing to serve many of you in my new position.
