The Mississippi Highway Patrol has been out in full force since Friday night as an influx of motorists were expected for the holiday weekend.
The Fourth of July enforcement period will not end until midnight, Tuesday July 4th.
“As of midnight Sunday, we had written 3,200 tickets, and unfortunately has one crash with a fatality,” said Captain Johnny Polous with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
The fatality was in Yazoo County.
Monday isn’t expected to the be the busiest of the enforcement period.
“We’re expected Monday to be fairly quiet, because people still have to work,” said Polous. “So that will give our troopers a little break.”
Polous said that even with the new seat belt law, the citations haven’t been for motorists and their passengers who didn’t get the buckle up memo.

“That shows that the word is out about the new law,” said Polous. “And with this law, we’re really trying to educate the public, not write more tickets.”
