A lawsuit has been filed through the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi North Division, claiming deceased attorney Mark Mayfield of Ridgeland killed himself because of the “political machine” involved in the Rose Cochran photo scandal dating back to 2014.
The plaintiffs, Robin Mayfield, Owen Mayfield, William Mayfield and the Estate of Mark Stevens filed a lawsuit against multiple defendants, including Butler Snow LLP, The City of Madison, Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins-Butler, and others.
The Mayfield family is represented by Dorsey K. Carson Jr.
Mayfield’s wife and sons claim that Mark Mayfield’s constitutional rights were violated and he was kidnapped and falsely imprisoned.
Mark Mayfield, was a tea party leader and attorney charged in the Cochran photo scandal.
He committed suicide in June 2014, just ahead of his scheduled July 2014 appearance before the Grand Jury on conspiracy charges in the case.
The photos were of Senator Thad Cochran’s late wife Rose, who was bedridden with dementia.
News Mississippi has reached out to Madison mayor Mary Hawkins-Butler, who would not comment at the time.
Butler Snow released this statement regarding the lawsuit:
“The Mayfield family experienced a deep and painful loss and we are saddened for them. But as to the lawsuit filed by Mr. Carson, there are no facts to support it and no basis for the claims he has made against our law firm. For that reason, we will vigorously defend that suit.”
