PEARL, Miss.–It was a beating that killed 35-year-old Clifton Majors Sunday about 8 p.m. at the Central Miss. Correctional Facility in Pearl. The inmate who did it, says he was in fear for his life.

Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps said the beating happened in the maximum security area.

“Our initial investigation shows breaches in security occurred in order for Inmate Smith to be able to assault Inmate Majors,” said Epps. “We will take the necessary disciplinary action upon completion of our investigation.”

According to Epps, the man who did it was 20-year-old Tyler Smith of Ittawamba County, who was sent up on a larceny conviction. He readily admitted to the killing and said Majors was out to get him.

No weapons were involved, according to investigators, just bare fists.

“What charges will be filed depends on the outcome of the investigation,” CID Director Sean K. Smith said.

Majors was in prison on a variety of charges: burglary of a residence (Lamar County), armed robbery (Marion County) and conspiracy (Sunflower County). He was serving 18 years.

Smith was only set to serve two years.
