The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida is monitoring a system in the northern Caribbean/southern Gulf of Mexico that is now presenting a 60% chance of forming a tropical cyclone over the next 5 days.
Daniel Lamb with the National Weather Service said it’s a situation where there is still plenty of time to monitor and to watch conditions.
“Pretty much anytime during hurricane season, we encourage people to keep up with the latest forecast. But this is certainly not the type of situation where people should be overly concerned, just keep an eye on things” Lamb said.

National Weather Service meteorologists are keeping a close eye on a system that they say has a 50% chance of developing into a tropical depression over the next 5 days (the area in orange).
Brad Bryant, head forecaster at the National Weather Service in Jackson, says while current models show a low likelihood that this system will form an outright tropical cyclone, there’s still a chance that Mississippi will feel the effects of it through enhanced rainfall next week.
They say the quiet times are the best times to form a plan. With this system forming in the Gulf, take some time with your family to map out a safety procedure in the event of a worst case scenario.
