The opioid epidemic continues to sprawl across the Magnolia State, withering the lives of those addicted, as well as the lives of their families.
In response, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics is teaming up with the state department of mental health and the Board of Pharmacy to hold town-hall style meetings to bring Mississippians into the fight against prescription drug abuse; an effort that MBN director John Dowdy says is absolutely necessary.
“This meeting is designed to bring the public together to create situational awareness to the epidemic we’re facing currently, concerning prescription pain killers and heroine,” Dowdy said.
The first meeting is in Brandon, but he hopes to spread the message across the state.
Dowdy clarified: “Honestly, we’re hoping to try to do as many of these in as many towns as we can. Currently, we’re looking to schedule in the immediate future, town hall meetings in Columbus, Starkville, Oxford, Vicksburg, Hattiesburg, McComb, Natchez and along the Mississippi gulf coast.”
The first meeting is May 23 at the Civic Center in Brandon.
