JACKSON, Miss. — You may be voting on another person hood amendment in the next couple of years. The last one, Initiative 26 from 2011 did not pass, with 58 percent of the votes against it. Right now there is a grassroots effort in Tupelo known as Initiative 41.
Tanya Briton, spokesperson for Pro Life Mississippi ,says the language in the new amendment is different. “One of the thing things they are making clear, from conception to death, you define a human being as a human being the entire time.”
They are hoping to get the initiative on the ballot for 2015, which means they have about a year to get the 108,000 signatures necessary for a vote.
Opponents believe the person hood amendment would affect access to in-vitro fertilization, birth control and care for high-risk pregnancies.
