OXFORD, Miss.–On Tuesday night the city of Oxford passed cold beer sales in stores and Sunday alcohol sales for beer and light wine during a board of aldermen meeting.
“I have mixed feelings,” said Oxford Mayor Pat Patterson. “But the sky is not going to fall because we’re selling cold beer here in Oxford.”
Beer sales are still illegal outside of Oxford in Lafayette County, although liquor and wine sales are allowed there.
The bars in Oxford on Saturday nights have closed at midnight due to no Sunday alcohol sales and Patterson said that will not change because of these new laws.
“That would have to be a totally separate matter.”
Sunday sale hours are only between 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. just like their restaurant counterparts had to abide by when they were allowed to sale on certain holidays.
When asked about possible extra tax money, Patterson said that’s not likely for the city.
“It really won’t make one difference one way or the other from an economic standpoint,” he said.
