“Biloxi Black Beach Weekend” sees booming numbers, rising tensions with residents

Early estimates from this weekend’s revelry show over 60,000 people were on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for spring break. Biloxi Police Chief John Miller said while most people were well-behaved, there was some trouble.

Friday night, before the crowds arrived, a traffic stop netted 109 pounds of marijuana. Police said the driver was “a spring breaker.”

Sunday afternoon, an altercation at Edgewater Mall in Biloxi involved a group of spring breakers assaulting mall security and a police officer.

Throngs of people, and bumper-to-bumper traffic marked most of the celebration, but residents expressed their concerns over the lack of security as the party spread from the beach into neighborhood streets; even into the front yards of homes.

Officials are exploring ways to keep the peace and ease the traffic gridlock for next year’s Biloxi Black Beach Weekend.
