Monday night the northern and central part of the state were hit with some severe thunderstorms and a few tornado warnings.
The storms damaged homes throughout the state and left nearly 4,000 people without power. The majority of those are in Hinds County.
All power is expected to be restored today by 2:00 p.m.
As of this morning the following schools were closed due to the outages:
- Raymond Freshman Academy
- Raymond High School
- Rebul Academy
- Utica Elementary Middle School
No tornadoes have been confirmed, but officials suspect one touched down in north Mississippi. News Mississippi will continue to update as more information becomes available.
The National Weather service confirmed that the majority of the damage was along I-20 with multiple hail and strong wind reports. Numerous trees and power lines were knocked down and hail was reported to be the size of a golf ball.
However, Monday might not be the worst of it.
“We are looking at better chances of bad weather moving through the area beginning Wednesday night and moving through Friday morning,” said John Moore with the NWS.
The storm is expected to affect all of Mississippi as the two lines of severe weather move through the state. Moore said the threat will be similar to Monday’s storms with hail, strong winds and potential tornadoes.
