Governor Phil Bryant has been forced to make yet another budget adjustment.
The governor released a statement Friday regarding the cuts.
Today, I have once again adjusted Mississippi’s budget. It is the Governor’s statutory responsibility to balance the state budget. I will uphold that duty.
I will utilize $39 million from the Rainy Day Fund and have requested authorization to access additional funds to minimize the impact on public education and vital services such as the Military Department and the Highway Patrol.
Fortunately, the Legislature heard my call to fill the Rainy Day Fund. Even with today’s withdrawal, the state’s savings account still contains a healthy $240 million.
Like hardworking Mississippi families and businesses, government must live within its means. It would be irresponsible to spend money we do not have. As long as I am Governor, we will spend taxpayer money prudently, conservatively and in a manner that maximizes the effectiveness of available funds.
Below is the letter Governor Bryant drafted to Laura Jackson, State Fiscal Officer, regarding the cuts.
