SUMRALL- On Thursday night in Sumrall members from over 15 fire departments came together to remember volunteer firefighters Alvin Beasley and Lorrie Sykes.
Beasley, 80, and Sykes, 53, were killed on Wednesday evening by a hit-and-run. They were directing traffic for an incident on Highway 589 at Oloh Road. Police have arrested Brandon Chance Eaton for the crime after leaving the scene.
He also struck firefighter Shaun Hohn who suffered broken ribs and a bruised leg. Since then Hohn has been released from the hospital.
Alvin worked for the Sumrall Volunteer Fire Department for 47 years. He served as fire chief and in other positions all over town. The station is named in his honor and the walls inside are filled with plaques and trophies to honor him.
Lorrie recently joined the department and also worked at the department in Hickory Grove. She was said to have had a pation for being a first responder and EMT.
Eaton, 31, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death. His bond has been set at 30,000 by Lamar County Justice Court Judge Charles Greer.
Officials are still awaiting the results of the toxicology report. The sheriff’s department said they could not comment at this time about whether or not further charges would be brought against Eaton.
