ROLLING FORK, Miss.–There may be a lot more bear than there used to be in Mississippi, but killing one is still not an option. It cost Ryan C. Murphy, 32, of Brandon, plenty of dough and the loss of his bow.
Murphy killed the bear last year while bow hunting in Issaquena County. It was a mistake he may be regretting for a long time. Because Louisiana black bear (technical name for the bear he shot even though it was in Miss.) are still on the federal endangered list, he was sentenced this week to a $10,000 fine, to pay $10,000 more in restitution to the state and to pay $5,000 to a bear restoration non-profit.
Murphy will also be on probation for two years and what may be worst of all, he can’t hunt anywhere in the world for two years.
