JACKSON, Miss.- The National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA) has commended Mississippi for having one of the strongest charter school laws in the country.
The state received 26 out of 33 possible points for authorizer quality and school accountability. That ranked Mississippi eighth among the 44 states that have charter schools.
According to Empower Mississippi, the law was passed in 2013, and since then Mississippi has created three charter schools, all located in Jackson. These schools serve about 550 students grades 5-7.
The law was changed slightly in the 2016 legislative session to allow students from C, D, and F school districts to cross lines and attend a charter school.
