JACKSON, Miss.- The Mississippi Wildlife Federation has created an option for you to give back this deer season, while making sure you don’t waste any good meat.
It’s called Hunter’s Harvest, and it is a program set up by the Mississippi Wildlife Federation. Through a network of about 30 deer processors, they work together to feed families in need across the state. The processors are set up through the program to accept donated deer.
“If you’ve got your fill in the freezer but you’ve got a few deer you still want to get off your property, you can actually take them to the processor, say ‘I want to donate these to Hunter’s Harvest’ and drive away,” said Brad Young, executive director for the Mississippi Wildlife Federation.
The Mississippi Wildlife Federation is a non-profit organization established in 1946 to protect and preserve the states wildlife legacy and conservation. Their mission is to conserve the state’s natural resources and protect the wildlife legacy. They partner with conservationists across the state to ensure natural resource conservation, environmental quality, hunting, fishing and other outdoor recreation in Mississippi.
The Hunter’s Harvest allows for all the deer meat donated to be distributed to local food banks within the state.
“Every pound of venison we provide provides a meal for four people, so that’s a family right there,” said Young.
Last year around 13,000 pounds of deer meat were processed for the fundraiser. That equals close to 52,000 meals provided by deer hunters for Mississippians.
