JACKSON, Miss.- Cuban leader Fidel Castro has passed away at the age of 90.
U.S. Senator Roger Wicker had this to say following Castro’s death:
“Fidel Castro may be gone, but the oppression and tyranny characterized by his iron-handed rule continue to grip the island and its people. I call on the regime to reject the methods of the past and deliver much needed political and human rights reforms to the Cuban people.”
According to the New York Times, his estranged sister said she was told he died of a heart attack, but no cause of death has been confirmed.
Castro governed the people of Cuba for 47 years first as Prime Minister and then as President. He resigned in 2008, handing leadership of the country to his brother Raul Castro.
