PANOLA COUNTY, Miss.–It’s been five years since a state of emergency was declared for the North Panola School District. But, with a new look at improvements, that district has now been given permission to go ahead with electing a brand new school board.
It was 2008 when Gov. Haley Barbour declared a state of emergency in the district at the request of the state Board of Education. At that time the situation was bad. There were serious accreditation issues and serious deficiencies that the state felt would mean a sub par education for students there.
According to a news release from Gov. Phil Bryant’s camp, most of those issues have been cleared up and that means its time for the district to come out from the control of its state-appointed conservator and elect a brand new board of trustees.
That election date has been set for Nov. 5, with a qualifying date of Sept. 6. If a run-off is needed, that will be Nov. 26. The plan is to have the brand new board in place by early next year.
