BILOXI, Miss.- The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has announced at the Mississippi Restoration Summit in Biloxi that registration for the Beach Outfalls Challenge will begin on January 9th.
The challenge was created to address the water quality issues of beach outfalls and how they effect areas along the Mississippi Sound. They will incorporate design ideas an solutions from the public. You can participate as an individual, students, company, or teams can create innovative solutions for untreated stormwater to improve water quality.
The intention is that these designs will be put into practice on a much larger scale across the Mississippi Coast.
The challenge will last from January 9, 2017 until March 156. Registrations can be found at www.beachoutfallschallenge.org. The top twelve finalists will be announced in May.
“The challenge is being implemented to address the water quality impact of beach outfalls along the Mississippi Sound by soliciting design ideas and solutions from the public.” said MDEQ spokesman Robbie Wilbur in a statement. “Individuals, students, companies, and teams can compete to create innovative solutions for untreated stormwater and improve water quality. It is expected that the designs will be implemented at a larger scale across the Mississippi Coast. ”

The project is funded by a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund, a grant worth 544,600 that was awarded to MDEQ.
