UPDATE: Mississippi man sentenced for terrorist activity

OXFORD, Miss.- A Mississippi man faceD sentencing on Wednesday for attempting to join the Islamic State terrorist group.

Muhammad Dakhlalla, of Starkville, plead guilty in March to one count of conspiring to provide material for a terrorist organization.

He was sentenced to 8 years in prison.

His fate was decided by U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock in Oxford, Mississippi. Dakhlalla faced 20 years in prison and a lifetime of probation.

He and his fiancee were arrested in 2015 in Columbus while trying to board an airplane for Istanbul, Turkey. The trip was disguised as a honeymoon.

His fiancee, Jaelyn Young, was sentenced earlier this month to 12 years. Authorities suggest Young was the mastermind behind the plan and was converted to Islam while at Mississippi State University.
