JACKSON, Miss.- Mississippi State University and The University of Mississippi both have football players facing charges for assault.
Jeffery Simmons, an incoming freshman at Mississippi State, who was found guilty of malicious mischief and plead no contest to simple assault, was arrested back on March 24. He originally faced an additional charge of disturbing the peace, that was later dropped.
Simmons was caught on tape repeatedly punching a woman in Macon. He will be required to pay restitution of, $711 in medical bills, $175 for alleged damage to the woman’s vehicle, along with an additional $475 in fines for the charges he received.
He has been allowed to enroll in school and join the team, however he is suspended for the first game of this season against South Alabama.
Charles Wiley of Ole Miss, also a new freshman, was arrested on Monday evening on a domestic violence charge. Also arrested with him was a female, 21-year-old Legend Fultz. They were released on bail at 11 on Tuesday morning.
Both are set to appear in municipal court in the next month.
Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze said that Wiley is suspended from all team activities and as officers continue their investigation other decisions will be made regarding his involvement with the team. Freeze says they take incidents like this very seriously.
