JACKSON, Miss.- The U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee approved a measure that would designate the home of civil rights leader Medgar Evers as a National Park Service unit.
The approval of Medgar Evers House Study Act will allow for a special resource study to evaluate the national significance of Evers’ home in Jackson. According to Senator Cochran and Wicker’s offices, the study would determine if the site is of national significance and consider alternatives for preservation, and protection.
A decision would also be made to determine who would interpret the site whether that be the federal, state, or local governments, or private entities and organizations.
Tougaloo College has had possession of Evers home since 1993 and made it a museum in 1997. They support the legislation.
Medgar Evers was a World War II veteran and civil rights leader who was assassinated on June 12, 1963 in his driveway in Jackson.
