WASHINGTON, D.C.- U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss) released updates Friday on current affairs being discussed within the Senate that could effect Mississippians.
Wicker said in a statement that the shooting in Orlando has reminded many Americans of the fear of radical Islam following 9/11.
Senators are discussing an appropriations bill that would fund the departments of Commerce and Justice within the FBI. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has the duel task of enforcing the law and investigating security threats to the nation. The are the leader in Joint Terrorism Task Forces.
Wicker also expressed his disappointment that President Obama has not been able to coordinate a plan to take down terrorist groups and end these senseless attacks on American citizens.
He said the current approach is not working and the Senate will be considering amendments that deal with suspected terrorists on a watch list and their access to firearms.
“Unfortunately, despite all our progress against ISIL on the battlefield and the financial realm, our efforts have not reduced the group’s terrorism capability and global reach,” said CIA Director John Brennan.
A Federal Aviation Administration, FAA, bill is being considered a top priority to counter terrorism efforts. It passed with overwhelming support in the Senate but is waiting on approval by the House of Representatives.
There are key airport reforms within the bill to protect passengers. These include better vetting of airport employees, greater security for international flights, and an expansion of the TSA PreCheck program to shorten security lines.
