BRANDON, Miss.–The city of Brandon voted Tuesday to raise their “restaurant tax” by two-percent.
The prepared food and beverages tax now sits at nine-percent in the city.
“It’s a quality of life thing for our community that we can begin to move toward,” said Brandon Mayor Butch Lee.
Lee noted the many people that live just outside of town but spend money on restaurants and other places and it’s an opportunity to use extra revenue to fund tourism.
“It’s part of a plan,” said Lee.”It’s not the only solution to our economic woes.”
He said the city will put the estimated extra $500,000 each year into building larger recreation parks and things of that nature to bring even more people to the city for large athletic tournaments.
