COPIAH COUNTY, Miss.- Efforts continue to be made for the two miners who were caught in a gravel pit collapse on Friday.
Mine Safety and Health Administration released a statement to MEMA and Copiah County that water is being pumped from the area that collapsed on the two mine workers.
They are currently waiting for a long reach excavator and pumps coming from Alabama to assist in the recovery. The operator has also reached out to a recovery outfit in the Mississippi River area for their expertise in this situation.
The recovery is taking place at Green Brothers Gravel Pit in Crystal Springs.
On Friday mine two mine workers, Emmitt Shorter and James “Dee” Hemphill, as identified by family members, were trapped when a gravel pit collapsed.
So far no efforts have been successful in finding the men, however, officials are optimistic that pumping the water out of the pit will give them a better chance at finding Shorter and Hemphill.
MEMA and EMA officials believe the men are trapped 10 to 15 feet below the surface.
