LOST GAP, Miss.–A stabbing happened Sunday at East Miss. Correctional Facility, locayed in rural Lauderdale County. Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun told WTOK it was a fight between several inmates and one was sent to the hospital.
The incident is now under investigation by the Lauderdale Sheriff’s Dept. and prison staff. The weapon was homemade and the injury was serious, but was not life-threatening, according to Calhoun.
The stabbing is the first major incident since the Southern Poverty Law Center and the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit at the end of May stating they believe conditions at East Mississippi are unsafe and, at times, cruel.
The prison is operated by the private MTC, under the supervision of the Miss. Dept. of Corrections.
