JACKSON, Miss.- State Representative Kimberly Campbell is resigning from her seat in the Mississippi Legislature.
Campbell is a democrat who has been involved in lawmaking since 2008. She made her announcement via Facebook that she will resign by the end of May to become the Mississippi State Director of the American Association of Retired Person (AARP).
Her post read:
“I will ALWAYS love the citizens of House District 72. But when God says, “move”…You must heed his call! There are some offers, you just CANNOT refuse! I’ll be resigning from the House of Representatives by the close of May. This is an exciting new chapter for my girls & me, please keep us in prayer! I THANK God for positioning me for the next level. As Kobe Bryant did, I’m leaving on my own terms.”
Campbell serves as the representative for District 72. She also sits on several committees in the House. She is the vice chairwoman for the Banking and Financial Services Committee and held the same position for the House Judiciary B Committee before that.
She has stood up against domestic violence and crimes against minor children as she served in legislature. The Clarion Ledger reports she supported fully funding the Mississippi Adequate Education Program, expanding Medicaid in Mississippi, and funding the support for mental health agencies and medical hospitals to ensure quality care, particularly for rural areas.
Gov. Bryant will hold a special election for the District 72 seat once her resignation is official. That person will serve until the term ends in 2019.
