Between managing Mississippi’s agricultural industry, running the state fair, and directing the Dixie National Rodeo, Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson is slinging some sweet tunes.
The commissioner announced Saturday that he plans to release a music album this spring. According to Gipson, the passion project is a long time coming.
“I’ve always wanted to do it for my family, and I’m finally taking the time to get it done,” Gipson said on Wednesday.
Many have become accustomed to Gipson’s booming voice at political stumps across the state. He’s already shared the singing voice a few times as well, such as when he graced the crowd at the Mississippi Economic Council’s annual Hobnob with a rendition of Hank Williams Jr.’s “A Country Boy Can Survive” in 2022.
Gipson says the upcoming album will include covers of country and western classics like that one, along with an array of his favorite hymns and gospel songs.
“God has given me a voice, and I want to use it,” Gipson explained. “I do sing at church and at other venues, but I’ve never actually recorded anything. So, I’m gonna lay it down and put it on a record.”
Gipson says the album will be released by early summertime.
