A suspect was taken into custody after an hours-long standoff with police in Pascagoula.
According to the Pascagoula Police Department, officers responded to a home on Krebs Avenue on Wednesday around 3:30 p.m. after receiving a call about people fighting. Upon arrival, officers observed a male subject, later identified as 39-year-old Darold Sim Payne, run into the home and barricade himself inside.
Two deceased victims were discovered outside of the residence as members of the Pascagoula Police Department, Ocean Springs Police Department, and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office worked to combat the situation.
Police officials later confirmed that Harold Payne, 86, and Jittuan Payne, 72, were the two that lost their lives in the incident. They were identified as the parents of the suspect.
After several attempts to negotiate with Payne, the Jackson County Emergency Services Unit deployed tear gas into the residence around 7:30 p.m., causing the subject to surrender. He was taken into custody without no further incident.
The bodies of Harold and Jittuan Payne were found after the standoff ended, with Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd saying that the two died of blunt force trauma. Police allege that Darold Payne beat his parents to death with a cinderblock, though an investigation into the bloody sequence of events is ongoing.
No officers were harmed during the standoff.
