A former Mississippi policeman will spend the next two years in prison after illegally purchasing a firearm for someone else.
Torrence Donell Mayfield, of Raymond, was sentenced to 24 months and fined $5,000 on Tuesday for making a false statement to a firearms dealer when purchasing a gun. Mayfield was an officer with the Jackson Police Department at the time of the crime.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Mississippi, Mayfield, 53, purchased the firearm in question at a pawn shop on Oct. 26, 2021. When filling out the required paperwork, Mayfield indicated he was buying the gun for himself, not someone else. Authorities found that to be false and arrested the ex-cop since it’s against federal law to make a false statement to a firearm dealer to acquire a firearm.
Officials did not say who Mayfield purchased the gun for.
Acting U.S. Attorney Patrick A. Lemon and FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert A. Eikhoff made the announcement. The FBI investigated the case, while Assistant U.S. Attorneys Herbert S. Carraway and Charles W. Kirkham prosecuted the case.
