A DeSoto County deputy has been hospitalized after reportedly being struck by a driver heading in the opposite direction on the interstate.
According to Sheriff Thomas Tuggle, the unidentified driver of an unspecified vehicle was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane of Interstate 269. The vehicle is reported to have narrowly missed several cars.
Tuggle stated that the deputy was positioned on the shoulder of Interstate 269, just east of Craft Road. The deputy observed the vehicle approaching at an extremely high rate of speed and made the sacrificial decision to pull into the path of the oncoming vehicle to prevent a collision with other cars.
The deputy is said to have taken the brunt of the impact head-on and was transported to Regional One Health in Memphis.
According to an updated statement from the sheriff’s office, the deputy has been released from the hospital and is now recovering at home.
Per officials, the driver of the other vehicle was not injured. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.
