The Magnolia State is known for producing some of the nation’s best music, and to celebrate those behind some of the greatest hits, the month of March has been designated “Mississippi Musicians Month.”
In 2024, lawmakers in both the Mississippi House of Representatives and Senate unanimously passed HB 365, establishing the month dedicated to commemorating the individuals responsible for the state being popularly coined the “Birthplace of America’s Music.”
All March, Mississippi’s rich musical heritage and iconic artists like Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, Jimmie Rodgers, B.B. King, and Elvis Presley — to name a few — will be highlighted alongside the state’s influence on the blues, gospel, jazz, and country music.
“Mississippi’s musical legacy is unparalleled, and Mississippi Musicians Month provides an opportunity for all of us to come together to celebrate the artists who have defined and continue to shape the world’s musical landscape,” Visit Mississippi tourism director Rochelle Hicks said.
“From the Delta blues to the soul of gospel and the rhythm of country, Mississippi is a true musical treasure. We encourage our tourism partners, communities, and music fans to join us in this celebration by submitting events to our website and using the hashtag #MSMusiciansMonth to amplify Mississippi’s musical legacy.”
Throughout the month, Visit Mississippi encourages all tourism partners to submit any music-related events for promotion on the organization’s official website. All events can be added through an online submission form where entries will be featured on the Visit Mississippi Events Calendar and highlighted on the Birthplace of America’s Music landing page.
Beyond the event submissions, Visit Mississippi invites communities, organizations, and all Mississippi music fans to come and celebrate local artists by sharing stories and highlighting events on social media using the hashtag #MSMusiciansMonth for a chance to be featured on Visit Mississippi’s platforms.
