150th Anniversary of the Surrender of Vicksburg

VICKSBURG, Miss. – One hundred and fifty years ago on the forth of July, the Siege of Vicksburg came to an end. The city surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant and his army of the Tennessee. After that, the city did not celebrate Independence Day for almost 80 years. It was not until 1947 after World War II that the city celebrated the day again. It also helped that General Dwight Eisenhower was visiting the city. 

This Independence Day several events will take place at the Vicksburg Military Park including a commemoration of the surrender at 10 a.m. where a US flag will be raised during a cannon firing and salute. An illumination of the park, will lasts until 6 p.m., and live music in front of the Old Depot Museum will be at 7 p.m.
