An investigation is underway after a fatal officer-involved shooting in Flowood.
According to a press release from the Flowood Police Department, the officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Saturday at 3:49 p.m. on Lakeland Drive at Treetops Boulevard. While the vehicle in question pulled over, one of the passengers got out and fled on foot.
“As officers pursued the suspect, the individual produced a firearm and fired at officers, striking one of the officers in the stomach. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect,” the press release noted.
Medical personnel made it to the scene quickly and the suspect was transported to the nearby University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where they succumbed to their injuries.
The officer who was shot was also transported to a local hospital and is now in stable condition.
Names of those involved have not been released at this time. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case.
