With former Republican state Sen. Jenifer Branning recently being sworn in to her new post as justice on the Mississippi Supreme Court, a special election date has been set to fill her seat at the state capitol.
Gov. Tate Reeves announced Tuesday that April 15 will be the day voters in Senate District 18 head to the polls. The district encompasses Leake, Neshoba, and Winston counties and was won by Branning three consecutive times before her campaign launch for the state’s highest bench.
Branning defeated incumbent Justice Jim Kitchens in a November runoff to become the only female on the Supreme Court.
The qualifying deadline for candidates looking to replace Branning in the Senate is Feb. 24.
