The Mississippi State Department of Health released its annual report card this week, showing the state continues to face a wide range of public health issues that require considerable attention. The latest data also reveals several health trends worth noticing among Mississippians.

Firearm Deaths
As of 2023, The MSDH reported a total of 844 firearm-related deaths, resulting in Mississippi being ranked with the highest firearm mortality rate in the U.S.
Chronic Diseases
One of Mississippi’s significant concerns that require intervention is the persistent challenges regarding chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. These diseases were the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Mississippi. According to the report, heart disease is shown to be the number one cause of death, accounting for 30% of all deaths. Diabetes is shown to be a condition that affects Mississippians as the state consistently ranks among the highest in terms of diabetes.
Infant Mortality Rates
Infant Mortality consistently stands to be a critical issue in Mississippi. The state has one of the highest rates in the nation, standing at 9.0 deaths per 1,000 live births.
Opioid Deaths
Opioid deaths in Mississippi continue to decline with a total number of 496 deaths in 2023. The state has the 14th lowest opioid-related death rate in the nation.
Honor Roll Programs
MSDH has launched four programs to address and aid with some of Mississippi’s healthcare issues:
- Transformation of Community Health with CHDS: This program will improve all public health services by enhancing wellness through collaboration with several sectors in Mississippi.
- Acute Care Systems: This program aids all those with specialized trauma care, STEMU, as well as stroke patients through a designation process in hospitals in Mississippi.
- Syphilis Task Force: This program addresses syphilis and congenital syphilis through innovative practices in Mississippi.
- Health Facilities Licensure: This program will help regulate all healthcare systems and facilities in Mississippi, ensuring that the facilities comply with state and federal standards.
